• January 21st – Look, dudes are for looking, dammit – but the more you think about it, the more it’s obvious how these beliefs are wound throughout our social narratives about sex, from arguing that teen girls have sex for attention (not desire) to the way that homophobes obsess over gay men having anal sex, which puts a man in the inconceivable/intolerable position (in their view) of being penetrated, which is what women are for.

I do think that it is *almost* a day late and a dollar short. So I was wondering why put effort into amending the constitution to cover something that is largely covered by a lot of law aready. They way the ERA is worded I think that it could prove to be an interesting wedge on a few of today’s more controversial topics.

I really only knew of the amendment through history class and hadn’t ever looked at the exact text. The key part is Section 1:

“Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”

(Now at this point I might suggest that the word sex be replaced with gender. These days sex more often refers to F*ing than it does to gender.)

But my my my, how would that simple sentence affect same sex marriage, or abortion, or specific medical laws that affect only one gender?
