Linky things March 30th through April 6th

Here is some stuff I have been reading that I thought folks might like:

  • April 6th - TRON 1982 Trailer - this is a really nice modern style redo of a trailer for the original Tron - I'd go see this movie (to be fair, I did, and I own it now)
  • April 6th - Constance McMillen: I was sent to a fake prom - (I don't have a swear bad enough to start this comment) People are really really shitty.
  • March 31st - Jim C. Hines - Racist, Sexist, and Homophobic - This is the 2nd or 3rd of these kinds of discussions I've seen in the last few days. And the comments are also good (if a bit self congratulatory). All in all owning your shit and trying to to turn it into compost instead of wallowing in it.
  • March 31st - Blog of Rights: Official Blog of the American Civil Liberties Union » Is Facebook Unliking Privacy? - This article covers much of my trepidation about facebook. And while it is talking about possible things happening in the future - its facebook's attitude and business model that make it worrisome.
  • March 31st - Why I Won't Attend Easter Mass | The American Prospect - "How can Benedict expect to bring sinners to God, or dare write that gay relationships are the "destruction of God's work," when he cannot admit to the Church's own complicity in actual moral transgressions?" (not that I believe in sin, but within the context of their own religion it doesn't make any sense)
  • March 30th - Why Are All These Homosexuals Making Me Think About My Shapely, Toned Buttocks? - "The reason liberals are so mean to conservatives are twofold: the first, and most important, is that many conservatives tend to take every disagreement as a personal affront and a violation of their God-given right not to be uncomfortable. The second is that conservatives and liberals don’t agree on much, and people who disagree tend to disagree. Shocking, I know."  (my emphasis - because I've run into this so often even with other liberals that I have disagreements with)
  • March 30th - The Republic of T. » So Much For "Law and Order Conservatism" - I wonder how much the fact that a lot of the left doesn't take these people seriously makes them even more nuts.

Linky things March 23rd through March 27th

Here is some stuff I have been reading that I thought folks might like:

Linky things February 12th through February 16th

Here is some stuff I have been reading that I thought folks might like:

  • February 16th - Story Time - Re-tweeting ;) - this is just so full of awesome . . .
  • February 16th - Seasons of Lace - You all Rock! - I am just sharing this - cause its something that I do and something that was done for me - and mostly happens away from this blog and friends list.
  • February 16th - If you don’t like a catch-22, you shouldn’t go around being female - "then all of a sudden people start acting like going out with men and allowing yourself to be alone with them---and god forbid, floating the possibility of having sex with them!---is outrageous behavior and anyone who engages in it should expect nothing short of being raped and possibly beaten severely. "
I start to wonder - why "She was asking for it" Means he isn't guilty of it? Even if she was (whatever the fuck that would be) - he shouldn't of done it.
  • February 16th - Breathe through your belly - "I suspect this has more to do with showing off our tits and looking like we have cute little tiny waists, because what’s a life free of anxiety if men think you are unsightly, right? (That would be sarcasm, yes.) ... Anyone care to argue that society’s pressure on girls to look a certain way does not constitute malicious disregard for our health and well-being? "
  • February 16th - The Pernicious Influence Of Lefty Blogs -" 'We literally have no agenda,' Bayh shot back. 'How can they be threatened by a group that has taken no policy positions?'  I think Bayh thought this was a defense--but speaking for myself, and I think a lot of progressives, it's actually the problem."
  • February 16th - TSA forces travelling policeman to remove his disabled four-year-old son's leg-braces - You have to be freaking kidding me - and this made us safer how?
  • February 16th - All are responsible - Making such an explicit, preemptive distinction between guilt and responsibility may be necessary in part due to an ambiguity of language. The question "Who is responsible?" can mean many things, among them, "Who is to blame?" Talk of responsibility is thus frustratingly likely to prompt the denial of blame which, in turn, becomes a denial of responsibility which, further, becomes itself a kind of blameworthy irresponsibility.
  • February 16th - Pop Life and Race Matters - Big Questions - which are really the big ones?
  • February 12th - I felt I needed to repost this - Coin Toss . . .

Linky things February 9th through February 10th

Here is some stuff I have been reading that I thought folks might like:

  • February 10th - Suspending your disbelief for a movie in which only white guys are interesting - "Surrounded by only look-and-think-alikes, it becomes impossible not to become parochial and stagnant. After all, one of the main social benefits of fiction is the encouragement of empathy, and these narrow narratives deny us its full expression."
  • February 10th - South Carolina's Brilliant Idea - Terrorists who want to overthrow the United States government must now register with South Carolina's Secretary of State and declare their intentions -- or face a $25,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.Terrorists who want to overthrow the United States government must now register with South Carolina's Secretary of State and declare their intentions -- or face a $25,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.
  • February 9th - Rules for Anchorites - Gender Bowl - This place where men and women can barely stand each other long enough to have mutually unfulfilling sex and procreate. Where women are the sole source of everything irritating and wrong in a man's life, plus she's never hot enough, plus you have to, like, interact with her sometimes. No amount of lower pay or discrimination or suffering is enough to punish her for the simple act of being a woman. And men are simple and stupid and violent, but obviously should be given the keys to the world because women just suck so much.
  • February 9th - Jim C. Hines - Real Men - "I was planning to transition into my own thoughts about being a man. What I think a real man should be. A healthier, better list. But it didn’t work. Say you go with “A real man takes care of his family.” Why does this have anything to do with gender? “A real man protects those who need his help.” And a real woman doesn’t? “A real man respects women.” No, a decent human being respects women. And men." This guy is a new read for me, and usually TOTALLY worth it.
