We went to the zoo for E's bday last weekend, I really like some of the buildings they've put in since I was really there last. But as is frequently the case, the human denizens of the zoo offer up the most amusing viewing.
Like usual for Evan and I the holiday was a marathon. The season, as always, kicked off with my mom's birthday on the 24th.
Family dinner, holiday and b-day presents and the happy mayhem you get with 7 adults and 2 munchkins.
Xmas morning Erin and I do the potato latke tango, frying up 20lbs or so of crunchy potato goodness. Then its shower off the grease and spend the day catching up with a pile of family, eating a pile of lox and bagels (and of course latkes), and finally heading home and collapsing into a coma.
Friday I wake up happy to be in my own bed. This year though Evan and I havew added boxing day to the marathon. We invited over all of Evan's father's family as well as my parents, David and Erin, the kids and my grandfather. In total about 20 people. So Evan and I had a busy day cooking and cleaning.
Having everone over was great and I hope we can do it again in the future. But boy were we tired, and saturday we just crashed and laid on the couch for most of the day, when we weren't napping.
Sunday we went to my mom's and played games and had a greart time. Phew!
Now its just new years stuff, and then I get to relax and make soup.
I did - I hope you will as well.
To add to the list of stories already out there about voter turn out. Usually we vote in the small adjunct library at the local elementary school. There are 2 tables of folks dealing with paperwork and ballots, and 4 voting booths. We show up right at 6am are one of the first 4 people there, occasionally being there before they are ready to deal with voters. We usually cast one of the first ballots in the precinct and are out the door just a few minutes later.
Today we were in the gym, we showed up about 6:10, there were lines, and about 16 voting booths. We had to wait, but we still got out in time for Evan to make the 6:39 train this morning. And I was very pleased to see so many folks voting.
More details on yesterdays wallet post
I didn't get mugged or anything - It was in my purse and then it wasn't. I suspect that it fell out or got filched on the very short bus ride between work and the train that I take when i am lazy or late.
We found out it was stolen when the bank called Wednesday night to ask about a charge on one of our debit card accounts that they thought was suspicious. Thankfully they tried to charge a large amount on an account that has very little money in it and so the charge was declined, but it alerted us and we closed down my debit cards. There is only one charge that we'll probably have to dispute and it was for just a little over $100. All in all so far not so bad.
Really the worst part is that I had not yet quit myself of the habit of carrying around more personal id information than is adviseable these days. So we are going to have to keep a close eye on our credit report for the next while, and I have a lot of painintheassery to go through to get new ID. (and yes I know I was dumb, please don't anyone remind me, I feel stupid enough already)
as a side note: One of the reasons I haven't been posting all that much recently (meaning months and months and months) is that life has been throwing Evan and I a fair chunk of pain-in-the-ass. Its been a hard year, and while very little of it is huge, quite a bit of it has been both money and time consuming. In lieu of complaing every month/week/day I've mostly whined to those I see most often and attempt to hoard the resources that I do have to deal with the shit as it comes. Some of this can be seen in the cancelling of regular events (like music and craft days), and me dropping off of many people's radars. I am truly sorry that I/we have had to do this, but I REALLY am trying to learn to take care of myself first, Evan second and worry about ya'all further down the list. With this in mind, I am going to ask that if anyone feels they have the ability and energy to intercede with the fates/energy/god/dess/chi etc on our behalf please do, I could really use a uneventful end of the year.
In the Tradition of my past strange birthday outings. This year I would like to not go out very far. Just as far as my backyard.
You see the present that I really want this year is raised garden beds for my backyard. But sadly neither Evan or I are overly handy and it is kind of a big job for just two people. So what I really need is some help from my friends!
Evan and I will provide all the materials, the plans, snacks and drinks, and hopefully with a little help from your garages and basements, all of the tools needed. What I need from you is a little of your time and energy.
The plan: People arrive and help Alyse and Evan build the beds in the backyard. Once we are all pooped or the beds are done, there are showers and towels for everyone, then dinner and desert and then hanging around and just having fun until its time to go to sleep.
A Few Shovels
A Few Hoes
4 foot Level
1/2 inch spade bits for drill
Any tools that people can't help us locate, we'll find other ways to provide.
When will this happen? August 31st (Sunday of labor day weekend) starting 11:00am
Please go to the evite at: http://www.evite.com/app/publicUrl/IWFODMJATQFCATLIVFMJ/AlysesBirthday to RSVP
Thanks! Hope you can come!
