It always surprises me, that in a group of people who are addicted to reading/watching/thinking about all of the posibilities science and/or magic can bring to our world, there are so many that are personally and politically so conservative.

  1. I’ve noticed that too!

I have reconciled this by the thought that they like to *think about* alternative realities, and various alien and semi-alien ways of existing, but they don’t want to have to confront that on a daily basis. They want *their own life* to be ordered, predictable, and (IMO) fairly boring. They also want to make sure that Those Folks Over There Can’t Mess Up My Carefully Ordered Life. That means being Conservative with a Capital C.

    • I do agree that some of it seems to be about safety. Some of us have built a nice little world where we are finally secure, with people we feel comfy with. I my need for comfort vs growth tends to wax and wane.

Its not only fandom, there is certainly a wing of the SF writing community as well, that seems to lean towards being socially and/or politically conservative. I wonder if this is some of what underlies some of the weird gender dynamics at cons. (which is of course a whole other subject)
