I know a lot of people are running around a little freaked by some of the news about SixApart (LJ’s owners) laying off a bunch of people. I try not to let this kind of thing perturb me too much (remember the great strike out, and the lj boycott etc), but I also like to be prepared.
Last time the sky was falling I setup a blog at alyse.org and set it up to cross post from alyse.org to lj and occasionally used the feature. Today I played with importing Lj posts to my existing blog – if you think you’d like to do this here are some basic instructions:
This is a recommendation for importing LJ to a WordPress blog.
Download Ljarchive, run a full archive. When the archive is completed, go to File, export and choose XML writer. It will give you a few options for how to export, I chose to do it by year. You want to make sure your export file(s) don’t exceed 2mb.
Once the export is complete (mine was very very quick for about 2000 entries with comments), go to your WordPress site. Login to your admin section, and go to your import page – mine is under tools. Choose “Import posts from a LiveJournal XML export file.” Select the file or one of the files from your LJArchive export and import. Repeat until all of your export files are imported.
Its pretty simple, but you lose your security settings (both private posts, and screened comments just import as regular stuff).
The reason that I suggest doing it this way is that the lj export tool on the site makes you export a month at a time. And for those of us who have been here for a while that can be a major PITA. Through LjArchive you can export in one batch, or 1 year increments.
